About

amanda layne miller is a storyteller* with a focus on the bizarre, surreal, & magical.

*filmmaker/writer/director/producer/performer/editor/fangirl/satirist/student of the world, etc…

A firm believer that fantasy is just an extension of reality, Amanda infuses fantasy and Afrofuturism into even her most straightforward projects. Her love for all things magically comedic began with works of art such as Bratz Fashion Pixiez, That’s So Raven, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, and grew with influences like Sofia Coppola, Tim Burton, Michaela Coel, and Hayao Miyazaki. Amanda’s work toes the line between the real and the surreal, and tends to feature highly absurd satire, cringeworthy groundedness, or both. Themes that keep coming up in Amanda’s writing include toxicity and miscommunication within relationships, belonging, sisterhood, home, and religion vs. cult behavior.

Amanda has developed an animated comedy/fantasy feature film with Netflix, been a TV Staff Writer for sci-fi show DREAM HUNTERS in Los Angeles & Beijing, Writers’ Assistant on multiple shows, and was featured on Coverfly’s Next List of upcoming writers in the industry in 2023. Most recently, she wrote, directed, and starred in a short film about One Direction with her comedy partner & sister Amber. The duo and their short were featured in the documentary Larger Than Life: Reign of the Boybands (2024) directed by Tamra Davis.

Together, Amanda and Amber founded Fangirl Central, a multimedia company that centers Black & queer fandom through live shows, film, and Fangirl Central Podcast. They also debuted an original autobiographical music revue about Black fangirls healing from white Disney Channel content called Disney Vortex that premiered at the Elysian Theater’s inaugural comedy festival in October 2022, and returned for a longer run in May-June 2023.

Whether working booths at Comic-Cons, being onset of film & TV productions, singing and dancing onstage, or creating her own work, Amanda is an experienced filmmaker, creative director, event producer, and fandom strategist who knows how to meet fans where they are, whatever the medium or space. As both a fangirl and artist, she tackles telling stories from both perspectives in authentic and exciting ways.
